Center for Lifecourse Epidemiology and Aging Research (CLEAR): Improving Health, Enhancing Function

About the Center

The Center for Lifecourse Epidemiology and Aging Research (CLEAR) is an interdisciplinary community of scholars committed to understanding health and well-being across the lifespan. We conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research on aging processes and outcomes in diverse populations.

CLEAR’s work is distinguished by its stewardship of multiple, ongoing cohort studies enabling unparalleled insight into the determinants of health across populations and generations. Through a strong commitment to education and training, we prepare the next generation of scholars and practitioners to address pressing challenges in aging and population health, promoting healthier, more equitable outcomes for all.

History

The Center, first named the Center for Integrative Approaches to Complex Diseases, was launched in the mid-1990s by founding director Dr. MaryFran Sowers who conducted groundbreaking research on women’s health and chronic disease.

In 2015, under the direction of Dr. Siobán Harlow, the Center was renamed to the Center for Midlife Science, reflecting seminal work characterizing midlife, menopausal transition, and health outcomes.

Now, the Center for Lifecourse Epidemiology and Aging Research (CLEAR), directed by Dr. Carrie Karvonen-Gutierrez, encompasses numerous multi-disciplinary studies that seek to understand critical periods for health and health changes across the lifespan.
